What is Council Tax?
Council Tax is a local property tax that is issued by your local council, The London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
How will I be billed for Council Tax directly by Tower Hamlets?
Vertus have provided a full resident list to Tower Hamlets Council to set up each resident with their account and e-bills will be sent directly to you by Tower Hamlets Council. It is a daily charge payable in advance with an annual bill issued for the period between 1st April to 31st March issued each year. This bill has been set up to be paid over 12 months but should you prefer, you can contact Tower Hamlets and it can be paid over 10 months.
How do I pay Tower Hamlets Council?
You will only receive ONE bill detailing your total annual charge and what you need to pay each month. Tower Hamlets Council do not issue monthly bills. We recommend you pay by direct debit or standing order each month.

Can I set up an online account with Tower Hamlets Council?
Once you have received your first bill from Tower Hamlets you will have the details of your account and can set up an online account where you will be able to:
Check the balance and details of your account
Request a copy bill
Request a refund
View any discounts or reductions you may have been granted
Apply for an exemption or discount
Make a payment (these will take three days to show on your account)
Change your method of payment to direct debit (if the bank account is in your name)
Tell us about your change of address or contact details
How do I claim single occupant discount?
If you live alone and are the sole adult, you can claim a discount.
How do I claim student discount?
If you are a full-time student, you can claim a discount or exemption depending on if you live alone with others or with other students.
What do I need to do when I move out?
You should advise the council via the council website when your tenancy ends so your council tax account can be ended. It is your responsibility to do this when you move out of the property, you will continue to make payments until you notify the council.
